Adium X + MeeboMe

Using Adium X to connect to MeeboMe

Well something that you would think is quite straightforward turned out to take a while to work out, but not long to implement. I simply wanted to add a web-based messenger service to this site and then to be able to receive any messages using my own application of choice, Adium X.

Adium X + MeeboMe

So for those of you who want to know how to do it:

  1. Set up a Meebo account if you haven't already and then follow the steps on the MeeboMe site to generate your code. Then add the code to your site and upload.
  2. Now you have the widget installed. Remember your account name and password as we'll be using these in a minute.
  3. Next open up Adium X (these steps should also be possible in any Jabber / XMPP client) and set up a new account. This needs to be a Jabber account.
  4. Set the Jabber ID to being your_meebo_account_name@meebo.org and enter your Meebo account password.
  5. Then under the 'Options' tab, enter meebo.org as your Connect Server.
  6. Choose 'Accept' as your Presence Subscriptions to stop having to avoid having to confirm a new user every time somebody opens your page!
  7. Check that the port is 5222 and that your firewall is not blocking this port.
  8. You should be up and running!

Have fun with it, and obviously this may change over time. This tutorial was based on Adium X 1.2.2.

For those of you that would prefer a different option, maybe try out Plugoo or Hab.La (this is very easy to use) as these are both also good.

Thanks. Without this post I wouldn't have been able to set it up.

Hey all, thanks for your comments and I'm pleased that you have managed to get it all to work. I have found it really useful to date, and am hoping to create a new Jabber client in AS3 for Flash...

I can't get this to work for the life of me. Does this still work?

This works just beautifully in Adium 1.3.6. Thank you very much for the tip.
